Fundamentals of Pilling and Abrasion - AM

Webinar

Pilling is the term given to the collection of fibres that cling together due to exposure to friction and rubbing on the surface of the fabric. The fibres that are balled together are collectively known as a ‘pill’.

Subsequently, abrasion is the eventual degradation of the body of the fabric, also due to exposure to friction and rubbing, however it is the term given to the breakdown of the yarns and eventual breakdown of the fabric, as opposed to the surface fibre ‘pilling’.

There are many internationally recognised standards and test methods in both pilling and abrasion, as it is a staple test for any textile as it represents such a common form of exposure for the end product. Tests today can also include aqua abrasion, abrasion testing performed under wet conditions, and also abrasion on hard surface or laminated materials.

This webinar will be covering topics such as:

  • What is pilling and abrasion?
  • Why is it important to test these areas?
  • The importance of test materials
  • Standards and methods
  • Overview of some tests

Who should attend?

This Fundamentals webinar is perfect for beginner laboratory technicians as well as people working in other areas such as garment technology, fabric manufacturing and those undertaking various textiles qualifications.

Understanding the basic pilling and abrasion properties of textiles and materials is the blueprint to building a core understanding when working in any of these areas.
